South Padre Island is home to some epic conditions for kitesurfing downwind. With over 15 miles of beach coastline available by vehicle, long down winders are a daily occurrence for local kite boarders as well as those visiting to the island. The wind during early May is primarily a warm South wind that cranks side-shore along the island, making for easy sessions up and down the coastline. The Downwind Race will start at the south end of the island at Isla Blanca County Park, and head through town and come to an end at the beach side of the event site (Andy Bowie State Park), approximately 5 miles of downwind insanity.
The Downwind Race at the South Padre Island Kite Round-Up is is open to amateurs of all ages that have paid the registration fee. If you you love the ease of going down wind in the ocean waves, then this event is for you. Grab you directional of twin-tip, and your fastest kite and we will see you at the starting line.
